TRAINING
A trained dog is a loved dog. Loved by family, friends, your veterinarian and the general public. There is no "magic" in training a dog and there are no shortcuts. Samoyeds are energetic and intelligent dogs that have a strong sense of independence and serious obedience training is absolutely essential. It takes time and patience but most of all it takes consistency by everyone who handles the dog. Train your puppy to behave the way you want before it learns the behaviours you don't want.

Some simple rules to remember:
- You are fun to be with. Always be nice to your puppy if it comes to you. This can be extremely hard when you "discover" something naughty the puppy has done. Don't call the puppy to see its bad action and then reprimand it. It will think it is in trouble for coming to you. It will think twice before coming to you again. Unless you catch the puppy in the act you will have to ignore it. If your puppy doesn't come when called, never go mad on it when it eventually does come – run in the opposite direction, calling as you go and give it a big praise when it catches up to you.
- You walk through doors first. Teach your puppy “wait” and then invite them to go through. It doesn’t matter if it is before or after you but good manners means not barging though.
- You control when your puppy gets in or out of the car. Again “wait” is the key.
- You share toys with your puppy. You need to teach your puppy to give up the toy on command. Perfect way to do this is to teach fetch.
- Your puppy must earn your praise. Nothing is for free. This can be as simple as getting your puppy to sit before a cuddle.
- You are dependable. For your puppy to trust you, you must never put it in a situation where the puppy will get hurt or feel unsafe.
- You can examine your puppy all over. Especially being able to hold your hand over the puppy's muzzle.
- Mean what you say. Only give a command once. This sounds easy but wait until you hear yourself say "sit”, "sit", "sit". Don't do it!!!! Your puppy will learn to only do as it is told after three or four commands. This is a very bad habit to break. If you don’t get the desired response after your first command then you need to back up and retrain.
- As part of your daily grooming routine you should examine your puppy all over. Look in his ears. Open his mouth. Put your finger on his tongue. Examine all of his paws and nails. Run your hand down his tail. Hold his muzzle in your hand for a few seconds. As well as checking your puppy's health you are teaching your puppy that it is safe to be examined. If you do this daily you should never have any trouble examining your dog for the rest of its life. You should be able to give tablets easily, clip nails easily and your vet will love you.
- Remember it is far easier to train your puppy to do something rather than try and train him not to do something. For example rather than trying to train him not to jump up, replace this with training him to sit. Train don’t blame!
