GROOMING
A Samoyed is not hard to keep looking beautiful if you maintain their coat with regular grooming. The problems start when you let time lapse between grooming sessions and what was once a half hour job is now a 4hr job.
A Samoyed does not get a doggy smell, even when wet. They can romp in the mud just like other dogs however the dirt drops off their coat once it is dry. You will know when your dog needs a bath but other people will still comment on how white they look. We only bath ours when we are going to a show or they have gotten into something particularly dirty.
While not essential, I cannot stress enough how important a proper dog blow dryer is to your grooming routine. Going through the coat with a forceful, no heat blow dryer has many benefits. This allows the hair to be parted so you can inspect the skin and blow out any dead, loose coat. It also blows dust and dirt right out of the coat making it far easier to comb through, helping to reduce your combing time as well as freshen your dogs coat without having to have a full bath.
We recommend daily grooming for puppies so they learn to tolerate the hair pulling and force of the blow dryer. It takes no more than an hour a week to maintain a healthy adult coat however if you do not get down to the skin and comb correctly, you can end up in a mess. Males will have a major coat drop approximately once a year while females may drop coat up to twice a year.
As part of your grooming routine you should examine your puppy or dog all over. Look in his ears. Open his mouth. Put your finger on his tongue. Examine all of his paws and nails. Run your hand down his tail. Hold his muzzle in your hand for a few seconds. As well as checking your puppy or dog's health you are teaching them that you are in charge. If you do this daily you should never have any trouble examining your dog for the rest of its life. You should be able to give tablets easily, clip nails easily and your vet will love you.

WHY NOT TO CLIP YOUR SAMOYED
There is a misconception when it comes to whether or not you should clip or shave a Samoyed. Their coat protects them from extreme weather and therefore should never be clipped. Extreme weather includes hot and cold as the coat acts as insulation and panting is their air conditioner. Much the same as heating and cooling your house, it is more efficient to be insulated. For this reason, Samoyeds cope very well with heat as long as they have plenty of water and a cool place to lay in the shade.
