ABOUT THE BREED
Samoyeds are a wonderful breed with some lovely qualities.
They are shown in the Utility ring in Australia but are essentially a working dog. This means they require regular exercise and above all, training. Samoyeds make great family pets and adore being with people so need to be included in your family life. They are exuberant, intelligent, have a real sense of humour and simply love life. They are active dogs and will become quite destructive and noisy if they are bored. Samoyeds are classed as a medium sized dog. Dogs (males) should be between 20 and 22 inches (51-56cm) tall at the shoulder while Bitches (females) are significantly smaller and should be between 18 to 20 inches (46-51cm) tall at the shoulder. This is not the only difference. Males have a broader head and should look masculine while females should be pretty. The males also have a bigger coat that requires a little more grooming. Males should weigh between 20-28kg and females between 16-22kg. This must be relative to height. You should be able to easily feel ribs with a light cover of fat, if you have to dig for ribs and back bone then your Samoyed is too fat. |
Samoyeds don’t get a dog odour which is a huge plus for us. They do however drop coat and require regular grooming. Their coat naturally repels dirt therefore frequent bathing is not necessary, however combing and blowing out old coat with a special dog dryer is a weekly must. We recommend daily grooming for puppies so they learn to tolerate the hair pulling and force of the blow dryer. It takes no more than an hour a week to maintain a healthy adult coat however if you do not get down to the skin and comb correctly, you can end up in a mess. Males will have a major coat drop approximately once a year while females may drop coat up to twice a year.
Their coat protects them from extreme weather and therefore should never be clipped. Extreme weather includes hot and cold as the coat acts as insulation and panting is their air conditioner. Much the same as heating and cooling your house, it is more efficient to be insulated. For this reason, Samoyeds cope very well with heat as long as they have plenty of water and a cool place to lay in the shade.
Samoyed puppies love to dig and chew and really don’t grow out of this. They also tend to ingest what they chew. This can cause stomach obstructions which can be life threatening and very expensive to treat. For this reason, we never leave our dogs unattended in a yard. We always have an area set aside for them that is Samoyed proof. Samoyed proof means a concrete floor, plenty of shade, water, an undercover area in case of rain and safe dog toys that cannot be eaten.
Samoyeds can be escape artists and secure six foot fencing is essential. It is also important to check they cannot get under fences and they manage to fit through very small spaces. They are such friendly dogs and will go home with anyone so it is important to make sure they cannot get out of your yard. This is another very good reason to have an area set aside specifically for your dog.
Samoyeds need to be walked regularly. They enjoy time spent with you and as well as keeping their bodies in good shape, it stimulates their mind. Small training sessions while on your walk will also help keep your dog happy and well behaved.
Samoyeds are not only a magnificent looking dog they are loving and affectionate. If you are prepared to put in the time and attention they need, you will be well rewarded. There is nothing quite like a hug from a Samoyed.
